The enduring mission of the Tobias Center is inspiring leadership excellence on a national scale. Special access to the Center’s work will be furnished to Indiana citizens for the distinct purpose of enhancing leadership within the state.
In August 2006, Philip L. Cochran, Associate Dean of Kelley School of Business - Indianapolis, and the Thomas W. Binford Chair in Corporate Citizenship, succeeded Gerald Bepko as Director of the Tobias Center. Professor Cochran is also Professor of Management at Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business in Indianapolis and Professor of Philanthropic Studies at IU's Center on Philanthropy. He is also a Fellow IU's Institute for Corporate Governance. Professor Cochran received a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and a B.S. in Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also received an M.B.A. in Finance, an M.A. in Economics, and a Ph.D. in Business, Government, and Society from the University of Washington.
Prior to joining IU Prof. Cochran served on the faculty of the Smeal College of Business Administration at the Pennsylvania State University where he was the Director of the Center for the Study of Business and Public Issues as well as the Director of the G. Albert Shoemaker Program in Business Ethics. While at Penn State, Prof. Cochran received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the MBA Association.
Prof. Cochran’s research is in the areas of leadership, corporate strategy, corporate citizenship, business ethics, corporate social responsibility and corporate governance. He is the author of articles that have appeared in such journals as: Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, Business and Society, California Management Review, Journal of Public Affairs, Contemporary Issues in Business and Society, Industrial Crisis Quarterly and Management International Review. Prof. Cochran has spoken at numerous conferences including as a Keynote Speaker at the Second Russian Business Ethics Conference in Moscow, Russia and an expert speaker on corporate governance and ethics at a U.S.I.A. sponsored conference in Bangkok, Thailand.
Prof. Cochran is the recipient of the 1994 Howard Chase Award for his contributions to the theoretical framework of issues management and of the 2002 Sumner Marcus Award for his contributions to the Social Issues in Management field. Prof. Cochran was the first President of the International Association for Business and Society and is a past Chair of the Social Issues in Management Division of the Academy of Management. Prof. Cochran also serves on the editorial boards of several journals including: Business Ethics Quarterly, Business & Society, Business Forum, Business Horizons, Corporate Governance: An International Review, Journal of Corporate Citizenship and the Journal of Public Affairs.
Dr. Gerald L. Bepko
Inaugural DirectorPrior to accepting the role of Inaugural Director of the Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence, Gerald L. Bepko concluded his appointments as an executive of Indiana University (IU) by serving as its Interim President for seven months in 2003. Effective August 1, 2003, he became Chancellor Emeritus of Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), IU Trustee’s Professor, and Professor of Law. During his appointment as IUPUI Chancellor he also served as IU vice president for long-range planning.
As Chancellor, Bepko had responsibility for the capital city core campus of IU which is the home campus of IU’s Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing and Law Indianapolis. During his tenure as chancellor enrollment grew by nearly 25 percent and external support for faculty activities grew from $38 million in 1986 to more than $200 million in 2001-2002. Chancellor Emeritus Bepko led the first six years of the seven year fund raising Campaign for IUPUI, which exceeded its goal of $700 million two and one half years early and reached more than one billion dollars before its conclusion on July 1, 2004.
In addition to teaching, conducting research and staying involved in consultative roles, Chancellor Emeritus Bepko continues to be active in his principal academic field of law by serving as a member of the Permanent Editorial Board of the Uniform Commercial Code, a member of the American Law Institute, and a life member of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. His involvement in community activities includes serving on the board of First Indiana Corporation; the board of trustees of Citizens Gas and Coke Utility; the board of State Auto Insurance Co. of Columbus, Ohio; the board of the Lumina Foundation for Education; the board of the James Whitcomb Riley Children’s Foundation; and chair of the board of the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association.
