Ernest V. Malone joined the Indianapolis Fire Department in 1986 and has served as Chief of Fire since 2014. Rising through every merit rank—from firefighter to chief—his career includes roles as Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Assistant Director of Training, Fire Marshal, Division Chief of Executive Services, and Assistant Chief of Fire. As Chief, he leads all department operations, policy development, and strategic planning across Administration, Operations, Logistics, and Community Risk Reduction. His leadership focuses on advancing safety, training, and long-term organizational success.
